A New Chapter for the Tar Heels
North Carolina’s basketball program announced a significant addition to its coaching roster this week, as Michael Malone appointed Bryan Tibaldi to his staff. The move signals a strategic push to blend NBA‑level insight with the university’s storied tradition.
Tibaldi arrives after a peripatetic career that has taken him from the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he spent more than six years in various roles, to stints at Providence, Cleveland State, DePaul, Missouri and Michigan State. His journey includes a tenure as video coordinator for the Chicago Bulls and a graduate assistantship under Tom Izzo at Michigan State, where he earned Academic All‑Big Ten honors.
A Coach With a Global Résumé
Tibaldi’s résumé reads like a world‑tour of basketball. He began as a graduate assistant at Michigan State, then moved to a video coordinator role with the Chicago Bulls, before assuming director of basketball operations at DePaul and later a similar position at Missouri. His most recent role was a multifaceted assistant with the Cavaliers, where he contributed to player development and video scouting.
Earlier in his career he also served as an assistant at Cleveland State and spent time at Providence under Kim English, where he helped shape the program’s tactical identity.
Family Ties in Chapel Hill
The personal dimension of the move is as notable as the professional one. Kelsey Tibaldi and their son Ben will join the Tar Heels community, a factor that English said will enrich the “Friar Family” and help the new staff integrate quickly.
Malone, who has been shaping the Tar Heels’ approach since taking the helm, highlighted Tibaldi’s blend of player development, video analysis and operational expertise. The coach described the hire as a “natural fit” for a staff eager to compete at the highest level.
