Buck Williams’ place among defensive legends
Bleacher Report recently released its all‑time ranking of the NBA’s best defenders, placing former Maryland star Buck Williams at No. 69. The list, which spans decades of defensive excellence, highlights Williams as one of the league’s most durable and impactful rim protectors.
Williams arrived in College Park in 1978 and instantly made his presence felt, leading the ACC in rebounding as a freshman and earning first‑team All‑American honors. He followed that with third‑place in ACC rebounding as a sophomore and second‑place as a junior, cementing his reputation as a cornerstone of Maryland’s powerhouse teams.
The Maryland native was selected third overall in the 1981 NBA Draft and went on to enjoy an 18‑year professional career. Over that span he amassed 13,017 total rebounds, ranking 16th in league history, and scored more than 16,000 points, joining an elite group of players who have reached both milestones.
His defensive statistics are equally noteworthy. Williams averaged 8.1 defensive rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.2 steals per game during his first seven seasons, and his 4,526 offensive rebounds sit third all‑time behind only Moses Malone and Robert Parrish.
Teammates such as Albert King have described Williams as a relentless competitor who made every game difficult for opponents. He played under legendary Maryland coach Lefty Driesell, who helped shape him into one of the program’s all‑time greats, and his career was marked by two first‑team All‑Defensive selections, three All‑Star appearances and multiple Defensive Player of the Year considerations.
Advocacy for his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has been voiced by Maryland officials and peers alike. A 2023 Maryland article called for Williams’ enshrinement, arguing that his body of work — spanning college dominance, NBA longevity and historic defensive rankings — deserves a place among the game’s legends.
