Bucknell Field Hockey Secures 2-1 Victory Over Sacred Heart in Strong Start

Young Bison squad shows depth and defensive prowess in early season win

Bucknell Field Hockey posted a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday, securing the program’s first 2-0 start since 2006 and improving its home record to 19-6 since 2023.

The Bison exploded out of the gate, scoring both goals in the opening five minutes and finishing the half with a 21-5 edge in shots while drawing nine penalty corners to just one.

Defensively, the Bison were relentless, with goalkeeper Sarah Althouse making nine saves and the back line limiting Sacred Heart to a single penalty corner and 14 shots, a performance that kept the visitors from pulling away until a late consolation goal.

A promising start for a young squad

Freshman contributors shone in the win, as Julia Coropolese recorded her first career goal and Carolyn Schiavo logged an assist, underscoring a roster that already features nine freshmen playing pivotal roles.

The Bison’s offense displayed balance, with three different goal scorers across the first two games, while the defense’s adaptability allowed the team to absorb pressure and maintain composure.

Next up, Bucknell will host Quinnipiac on September 4 and Cornell on September 6, hoping to build on the early chemistry and continue the surge on their home field in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
