Budd Grebb League Kicks Off New Season in Mon Valley

Community basketball league expands participation and introduces youth division

The Budd Grebb League, a staple of the Mon Valley’s basketball scene, is gearing up for its newest season, which officially opens on Monday at the historic Mechanic Street Playground in California, Pennsylvania.

A community basketball tradition

Commissioner Damani Stafford says the league has seen a surge in interest, with roughly 80 boys and 40 girls already registered, reflecting a growing appetite for community‑driven sport.

This year’s roster showcases some of the region’s top high school talent, including standouts Markus McGowan, Elijah Majors and David Wachinsky on the boys’ side, while the girls’ division will feature rising stars Ava Clark and Violet Trump.

In a bid to broaden its reach, the league has added a youth division for children in second through seventh grade, offering younger players a chance to learn the game in a structured, supportive environment.

Games will be held outdoors at Mechanic Street Playground, but inclement weather will trigger a move indoors to California Area Elementary School, ensuring that the schedule stays on track regardless of the forecast.

The season will culminate on Saturday, July 25, with a championship night that promises a block‑party atmosphere, complete of food, music and a celebration of the community’s athletic spirit.
