A Sweet Fundraiser with a Big Heart
On a crisp Saturday morning, the junior varsity and varsity field hockey squads from Brattleboro Union High School gathered on the school’s grounds to host a bake sale that quickly turned into a neighborhoodwide food drive.
Through the combined efforts of players, families, and local businesses, the event collected more than 105 pounds of dry pet food, along with cans of wet food and cat treats, all destined for the Windham County Humane Society. A donation from Runnings in Hinsdale added extra dry cat food to the haul.
The initiative was orchestrated by varsity coach Erin Cooke and junior varsity coach Kristyn Brewer, whose leadership helped channel the students’ enthusiasm into tangible support for animal welfare.
The fundraising target was not only met but surpassed, a testament to the generosity of a community that rallies behind its youth sports programs.
Looking ahead, the BUHS girls’ hockey team is set to open its regular season on Wednesday against Burr & Burton at Sawyer Field, with a 4:15 p.m. kickoff that promises to showcase the momentum built by both athletic ambition and charitable spirit.
Beyond the scoreboard, the campaign illustrates how high school athletics can serve as a catalyst for broader community engagement, linking sport, education, and local nonprofit causes.
