Bullitt East baseball captured the Sixth Region championship on Thursday, downing Bullitt Central 9-5 in a game that swung back and forth before the Chargers pulled away in the later innings.
The Turning Point
The Chargers jumped out to a 6-0 lead early, capitalizing on a string of solid hits and aggressive base running. Their lead held through five innings, with senior pitcher Carter Hilton shutting out the Cougars before they mounted a five‑run sixth‑inning rally that threatened to close the gap.
But Bullitt East answered the rally with three insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from Caden Phelps and a two‑run hit by Cooper Warnecke that stretched the margin to 9-5.
State Tournament Awaits
The victory sends the Chargers to the state tournament, where they will meet the Seventh Region champion Trinity, the top‑ranked team in the state. Coach Jeff Bowles, while remaining characteristically cautious about his program’s long‑term prospects, expressed confidence that the squad can compete on the bigger stage.
Bowles credited the team’s resilience and the unwavering support of the local fan base for the unexpected run, noting that the Chargers had finished the regular season at 5‑7 over their last twelve games and entered the region tournament as the third seed in the 23rd District.
With a 24‑11 overall record, Bullitt East will travel to Lexington for the state matchup, hoping to translate its regional momentum into a deeper playoff run.
