Baylor School announced this week that Michael Brent “Butch” Chaffin has been appointed as the new head varsity baseball coach, ushering in a new era for the program known for its rigorous academic standards and competitive athletics.
A Hall of Fame Legacy
With a career spanning nearly four decades and a win‑loss record of 552‑281, Chaffin stands among the most successful coaches in Tennessee baseball history. His induction into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023 underscored a trajectory that began with a 25‑year tenure at Cookeville High School, where he shaped dozens of players who went on to collegiate and professional play.
Beyond his high school achievements, Chaffin has contributed to the sport at the national level, serving as a talent scout for USA Baseball since 2006 and coaching the organization’s 12U team that captured a gold medal at the 2017 tournament. He also gained professional experience as an assistant at Tennessee Tech and as a scout for the Kansas City Royals before returning to the high school ranks.

Educators may also recognize him for his parallel career as a social studies teacher, a role he held for almost four decades at Cookeville High School, blending classroom instruction with on‑field mentorship.
Athletic Director Mark Price praised the hire, noting that Chaffin’s ability to connect with student‑athletes and his commitment to Baylor’s culture make him an ideal fit. “We are excited to see how his philosophy will elevate our program while preserving the traditions that define Baylor,” Price said.
Chaffin expressed enthusiasm about joining the Chattanooga campus, emphasizing his desire to build a sustainable development system that aligns with the school’s mission. He hopes to leverage his experience with the pitch‑count regulations he helped craft for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to foster both athletic excellence and character development.
