The atmosphere at Victory Field was electric as Butler University celebrated its annual Butler Night, a tradition that brings together alumni, fans, and the broader Indianapolis community. This year, the event featured a special moment for the university’s basketball program, with newly appointed head coaches Ronald Nored and Maria Marchesano taking the mound for ceremonial first pitches.
A Homecoming for Butler Legends
Both coaches are alumni who once wore the Butler Bulldogs jersey on the hardwood. Nored, who played from 2008 to 2012, described his pitch as "good" and said he tried to "give as much heat as possible," while Marchesano, a 2001‑2005 player, compared the experience to shooting a free throw, noting the loss of body feel but expressing confidence in throwing strikes.
For Nored, the appearance was more than a ceremonial gesture; it was a chance to re‑engage with the Indianapolis community that supported him as a student‑athlete. He emphasized the importance of being part of the city’s fabric and of connecting with Butler fans who have followed his journey from player to head coach.
Marchesano, who never imagined a coaching career during her playing days, called the moment "awesome" and highlighted how returning to Butler as a coach felt like a full‑circle experience. She noted that the transition from player to mentor has given her a new perspective on the game and on the responsibility of guiding the next generation of Bulldogs.
The excitement extends beyond the ceremonial pitch. Both teams are set to open their regular seasons on November 2. The men will host the Lafayette Leopards at Hinkle Fieldhouse, while the women will begin against Tennessee Tech in the same venue. The coaches’ return to campus has sparked optimism that the programs will carry the momentum of this homecoming into a promising season.
