BYU football has revealed its slate of captains and co‑captains for the 2026 season, a list that blends established veterans with newcomers who have yet to set foot on the Cougars’ field. The announcement spotlights two transfer players—Cade Uluave, formerly of Cal, and Roger Saleapaga II, a former Oregon tight end—who have been entrusted with leadership roles despite not having played a single down for BYU.
A Mix of Experience and Fresh Faces
Returning stalwarts such as senior running back LJ Martin and defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa, who earned his second consecutive captaincy after moving from Utah, join sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier and newcomer Walker Lyons, a transfer who brings a fresh offensive spark. The group also includes senior defensive end Bodie Schoonover, named a defensive co‑captain, underscoring the blend of seniority and emerging talent.
At the heart of the leadership structure is BYU’s 20‑player Team Leadership Council, composed of 13 seniors, five juniors and two sophomores. The council will rotate representation at the coin toss for every game, giving four members a voice in the ceremonial start of each contest.
The Cougars open the season on Saturday against Utah Tech at LaVell Edwards Stadium, a venue that will host the first test of this newly forged leadership group. The team enters the matchup riding a 12‑2 record from the 2025 campaign, a performance that set high expectations for the upcoming schedule.
Coach Kalani Sitake has emphasized that the captains will guide not only on the field but also in fostering a culture of accountability and cohesion. As the council’s influence spreads through practice and game day, the hope is that the blend of transfer experience and home‑grown talent will translate into sustained success.
