BYU Announces 2026 Football Leadership Council

Twenty players selected as captains and co-captains ahead of season opener

Brigham Young University has unveiled its 2026 Football Team Leadership Council, a 20‑player group chosen by teammates to steer the squad both on the field and in the locker room.

A New Era of Shared Leadership

The council blends senior experience with emerging talent, featuring four offensive captains, four defensive captains and twelve co‑captains who will share responsibilities across offense, defense and special teams.

Returning captains LJ Martin and Keanu Tanuvasa will once again wear the captain’s badge for a second straight season, providing continuity and veteran presence.

New offensive captains include quarterback Bear Bachmeier, lineman Bruce Mitchell and defensive standout Roger Saleapaga II, while the defensive unit will be led by Isaiah Glasker, Cade Uluave, Evan Johnson and Tanuvasa.

Among the co‑captains, Raider Damuni and Andrew Gentry return from last year’s council, joined by a cohort of seniors, juniors and sophomores that reflects the team’s depth.

The leadership group will be visible in multiple ways, with four members slated to represent the Cougars at coin tosses during games, while the rest will focus on internal guidance and morale.

The 2026 season opens at LaVell Edwards Stadium against Utah Tech, a matchup that will be streamed on ESPN+, marking the first test of the newly formed council’s chemistry.

Coach’s emphasis on shared leadership aims to foster a culture where every player feels accountable, a strategy that could prove vital as the Cougars look to build on recent progress.
