Kalani Sitake, the head coach of BYU football, has repeatedly stressed that since the Cougars entered the Big 12 in 2023 the program’s ambition is to eliminate excuses and construct a genuine contender built on depth and talent.
The current roster features more starting‑caliber athletes than in previous years, a fact that has made the task of defining a two‑deep depth chart a challenge for the coaching staff. Treyson Bourguet, a fifth‑year senior, is positioned as the backup quarterback behind Bear Bachmeier, while running backs LJ Martin and Sione Moa are the top players, with Devaughn Eka and Preston Rex competing for the third spot.
A Deep Roster Sets the Stage
At receiver, Legend Glasker, Kyler Kasper and Jojo Phillips are slated to start, while Reggie Frischknecht and Tiger Bachmeier are expected to contribute significantly in key roles. Redshirt freshman Siosiua Latu‑Finau is likely to be the first backup on the offensive line.
The defensive line will rotate six players across three core positions, with Keanu Tanuvasa, Bodie Schoonover and Justin Kirkland leading the group, while Tausili Akana and Nusi Taumoepeau provide additional pass‑rush pressure.
Linebacker corps will also be deep, with projected starters Cade Uluave, Maika Kaufusi and Siale Esera set to anchor the unit. In the secondary, Evan Johnson, Tre Alexander and Faletau Satuala are expected to start, and Jayven Williams, who transferred from Mississippi State, is slated to see significant snaps.
The kicking game, though inexperienced, is projected to be solid, with Matthias Dunn and Brody Laga handling field goal duties, while Legend Glasker and Devaughn Eka will manage kick returns and freshmen Fuller Shurtz and Cole Shulman will handle punting.
