A New Frontier for Football in the North
The seventh‑annual summer football camp hosted by former Minnesota Viking C.J. Ham in Duluth marked a milestone this year by launching clinics specifically for girls flag football players, drawing high school athletes from across the region.
Ham, who credits the sport with shaping his own character, said he wanted to give his daughters and other young women the same lessons he learned on the field, emphasizing pride in seeing girls take the game seriously.
Coach Erik Lofald, who oversees the camp’s instructional staff, expressed enthusiasm about the new direction, noting that the clinics could spark a broader movement of girls’ flag football across northeast Minnesota.
The Minnesota Vikings have long backed a statewide flag football initiative that now involves more than 100 schools, including Proctor, Grand Rapids, Mountain Iron‑Buhl, Cloquet and, soon, Duluth Denfeld, providing a pipeline for the sport’s growth.
A proposal before the Minnesota State High School League to classify flag football as an ‘emerging’ sport was set aside in June, with a final decision expected in October, leaving the future of official recognition still uncertain.
The NFL has positioned flag football as a non‑contact entry point for young athletes, a vision underscored by its upcoming debut as a medal sport at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Originally postponed due to smoky air from regional wildfires, the camp eventually proceeded under clear skies at Walt Hunting Stadium‑Marv Heikkinen Field, where Ham praised the participants’ skill and determination.
Looking Ahead
With the momentum generated by this summer’s camp, organizers hope the clinics will lay the groundwork for sustained participation and perhaps a formal high school league in the coming years, positioning Minnesota as a model for how communities integrate flag football into the broader football ecosystem.
