Cade Knutson Steps Into Dual Role at Bishop Manogue

From Fernley’s courts to the dean’s office, a coach’s journey shaped by mentors and basketball’s broader landscape.

Cade Knutson, a Fernley native who once topped the school’s all‑time scoring list with 1,479 points, has returned to Nevada’s basketball scene in a new capacity. In April he was appointed head coach of Bishop Manogue, the private high school that recently celebrated the legacy of former NBA forward Luke Babbitt, and he will also serve as the school’s Dean of Students.

Mentors Who Shaped a Career

Knutson’s path to this dual role was forged long before the announcement. As a teenager he traveled to Duke University, an experience that sparked his love for the game’s strategic depth. Under the guidance of his youth coach, John Balistere, he honed a work ethic that later earned him a graduate assistantship with Eric Musselman, the former Nevada head coach.

During his stint with the Nevada Wolf Pack, Knutson contributed to film analysis, scouting and player development, helping the team capture back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament berths. His decade‑long involvement with USA Basketball’s training camp in Las Vegas further broadened his perspective, linking him to a network that includes figures such as E.J. Singler and Jeff Knutson.

Now, as head coach, Knutson inherits a program that has already enjoyed success under Babbitt’s leadership. He says he intends to build on that foundation while also shaping the school’s academic culture as Dean of Students. The move reflects a growing trend of coaches taking on broader institutional responsibilities.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, Knutson’s story underscores the importance of mentorship. He credits Musselman and Balistere for modeling leadership, and he hopes to pass those lessons on to the next generation of student‑athletes in Fernley and beyond.
