A Strategic Shift
Cair Paravel is set to re-enter the 8-man Division 1 football landscape after a two-year absence from the class, a move that reflects both a tactical recalibration and a desire to reclaim a tradition that has defined the program for years.
Coach Randy Bond, who took the helm this season, argues that the team never should have left the 8-man format, pointing to the advantages that come with a larger roster and the ability to rotate players more freely.
The decision follows a period in Class 1A where foreign exchange students altered the player count, forcing the school to field a smaller squad. Last season the team operated with just 16 or 17 athletes, a constraint that limited depth and flexibility.
Despite those challenges, Cair Paravel made a deep run, reaching the Division 1 state semifinals in 2023, a testament to the resilience of the players and coaching staff under trying circumstances.
Opening the 2026 Season
The Vikings will open their 2026 campaign on September 11 against Stanton County, a matchup that will serve as the first test of Bond’s revised approach and the team’s renewed confidence in the 8-man game.
With most of the roster and the coaching staff already familiar with the 8-man style from their middle-school days, Bond believes the familiarity will translate into smoother execution and a competitive edge over opponents still adjusting to the format.
