A Milestone for the Program
For the first time in school history, Cal Poly’s baseball team has earned a place in the NCAA Super Regionals, a testament to a season of relentless effort and clutch performances.
The Mustangs clinched the spot by beating Saint Mary's 5-2 in a regional final that saw a blend of solid pitching, timely hitting and a bullpen that shut down the opposition in the later innings.
Veteran left-hander Josh Volmerding anchored the rotation, delivering six innings of two-run ball that kept the game within reach. His composure on the mound set the tone for the entire staff.
Ryan Tayman provided the offensive spark with a solo home run in the sixth that not only tied the contest but also etched his name into the program record books with 18 season homers.
Gavin Spiridonoff then delivered a decisive blow, launching a three-run homer that swung the lead in Cal Poly’s favor and underscored the team’s depth in power hitting.
Alejandro Garza added another layer of historic significance by collecting a single that broke the program’s career hit record, a milestone that resonated with fans and teammates alike.
Relief pitcher Corden Pettey followed with a scoreless seventh, preserving the lead, while Nick Bonn closed out the game with a six-out save, his 17th of the season and a clear indicator of the bullpen’s reliability.
Looking Ahead to the Super Regionals
The Mustangs will now travel to face the winner of the West Virginia-Kentucky matchup, a series whose location will be determined by the outcome of that contest. Regardless of venue, the Super Regional is slated for June 5-8, promising high-stakes baseball.
Coach Rich Hill and his staff have emphasized preparation, chemistry and the ability to execute under pressure as the team heads into the next phase. The program’s first Super Regional appearance marks a turning point and sets a new benchmark for future squads.
