Alumni, donors, and members of the Madden family stood alongside university leaders as the doors to the new John Madden Football Center swung open, marking a milestone in Cal Poly’s athletic history.
A Facility Built for Excellence
Spanning 37,690 square feet, the building was conceived by global design firm Populous and constructed by Hensel Phelps. Its modern footprint houses a 5,900‑square‑foot weight room equipped with 18 individual strength racks, a locker room named for Michael Lockwood, and a spacious student‑athlete lounge that invites camaraderie. Every element was chosen with the aim of elevating performance, recovery, and overall well‑being.
Inside, athletes find a hydrotherapy plaza dedicated to Jennifer Bonner Fisher, a nutrition hub overseen by the Couch family, and a sports medicine suite that brings together cutting‑edge treatment and rehabilitation. A terrace created by the Richard and Kathleen Zacky team room offers an indoor‑outdoor setting where coaches and staff can interact with players in a relaxed environment.
Honoring a Legacy
University President Jeffrey D. Armstrong spoke of John Madden’s deep understanding of the student‑athlete experience, while Director of Athletics Carter Henderson highlighted the center’s role in fostering excellence on and off the field. Head Coach Tim Skipper added that the facility reflects the program’s culture and aspirations, echoing Madden’s belief that success begins with preparation and community.
Community and Future
The center’s inauguration was made possible through the generosity of the Madden family and a host of donors. Their contributions not only funded the $45 million project but also ensured that future generations will have access to world‑class resources. In a nod to this legacy, Cal Poly announced a special John Madden Day celebration that will accompany the opening game of the 2026 football season against Idaho.
