Cal Poly has opened the John Madden Football Center, a 35,000‑square‑foot facility that pays tribute to the university’s most celebrated alumnus.
Design Inspired by a Legend
The center was developed in partnership with the Madden family and architectural firm Populous, creating a centralized home for Mustang Football that consolidates training, recovery and daily life under one roof.
Located at the south end of Spanos Stadium adjacent to Mustang Memorial Plaza, the building features a statue of Madden that greets visitors and links the facility to its namesake’s legacy.
A Lasting Tribute
Inside, athletes benefit from advanced training spaces, a covered terrace overlooking the field, hydrotherapy pools and a detached weight room, while a student‑athlete lounge offers flexible gathering areas.
Michael Lockwood, senior principal at Populous and a Cal Poly graduate, said the design reflects Madden’s spirit of boldness, intentionality and transparency, aiming to honor his values of preparation, teamwork and leadership.
University President Jeffrey D. Armstrong noted that Madden’s vision inspired the project, calling the center a transformational investment that will elevate the program for future generations.
Beyond performance, the facility embodies Madden’s broader philosophy, emphasizing opportunity and community, and serves as a permanent reminder of his enduring influence on football and at Cal Poly.
