Jason Dietrich, the longtime head baseball coach at California State University, Fullerton, announced his immediate resignation on Tuesday, citing family considerations that have compelled him to return to North Carolina.
Dietrich’s nine‑year tenure at the university includes five years at the helm of the program, a period highlighted by an NCAA Regional appearance in his second season and consistent guidance of the Titans through competitive stretches.
In a statement released to the campus community, Dietrich explained that his wife and children have relocated to the East Coast, making the move home a practical necessity for the family.
Jim Donovan, CSUF Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, thanked Dietrich for his dedication to the student‑athletes and acknowledged the impact of his leadership on the program’s culture and performance.
Cory Vanderhook, who previously served as an assistant under Dietrich, will step in as interim head coach through the 2027 season, bringing his own seven‑year stint at UNLV back to the Titans’ dugout.
A Program in Transition
The athletic department emphasized continuity, noting that Vanderhook’s familiarity with the roster and coaching staff should provide stability while a permanent search is conducted.
Fans and alumni have expressed both appreciation for Dietrich’s contributions and optimism that the program will maintain its competitive edge under interim leadership.
The move underscores how personal circumstances can intersect with collegiate athletics, prompting institutions to adapt quickly to maintain momentum on the field.
