After a goalless opening period in which both sides exchanged chances, Cal generated five shots while Pepperdine's goalkeeper Alyssa Savig made three saves to keep the Bears at bay.
Pepperdine broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, converting a chance that left Cal's defense scrambling and the scoreboard reading 1-0 in favor of the Waves.
The match also marked the collegiate debut of Amaya Faison, who entered the lineup in the first half and contributed to the Bears' attacking efforts.
With the defeat, Cal slipped to 0-1-2 on the season and now faces a road test against the University of San Diego on Sunday, a game that will be streamed on ESPN+.
