A Recruiting Reversal
During a visit to Ohio Stadium in 2022, Calhoun announced his commitment to Michigan, even though the Wolverines had not offered him a scholarship. The decision, made in the shadow of a rivalry game, later struck him as 'childish' when he realized Ohio State had never pursued him.
The following seasons saw him spend a year in Ann Arbor before transferring to Utah, then to Alabama, before finally landing at Ohio State in 2024. Each stop, he says, contributed to his development as a cornerback and as a person.
Lessons Across Campuses
At Utah under Kyle Whittingham, Calhoun refined his technique and learned the value of disciplined preparation. A subsequent year at Alabama under Nick Saban added a championship pedigree and a deeper understanding of high‑pressure environments.
Returning to Columbus, he found a new home where Coach Mikey Day’s expectations and trust have become the foundation of his resurgence, allowing him to focus on getting on the field and helping the defense.
A Team‑First Outlook
Calhoun emphasizes collective success over individual statistics, aiming to contribute to Ohio State’s defensive identity while keeping his NFL dreams in perspective. He notes that two years of eligibility remain, giving him time to grow both on and off the gridiron.
The upcoming matchup against Michigan on November 28 carries personal significance, not only as a chance to face the team he once pledged to, but also as an opportunity to reunite with former teammate Jermaine Mathews Jr. and be close to family.
