Cameron Mercer, a senior standout from Riverside Brookfield High School, announced his commitment to Northern Michigan University on May 4, sealing a decision that blends athletic ambition with academic focus.
A Standout Career at Riverside Brookfield
Standing 6‑foot‑2, Mercer operated as a shooting guard and became the program’s all‑time leader in three‑pointers with 213 makes, while ranking fourth in career points with 1,415. His senior season saw him average 20.8 points per game, hit 87 threes, steal 75 balls and shoot 83.2 % from the free‑throw line.
The journey to this commitment was not without setbacks. A mid‑season ankle injury sidelined him as a junior, but he fought his way back to full health and reclaimed his elite form, catching the eye of several Division II and NAIA programs.
Choosing Northern Michigan
Mercer cited the university’s strong academic reputation, a manageable financial package and the welcoming campus atmosphere as decisive factors. Though he acknowledged the cold Michigan winters, he said the overall environment outweighed the weather concerns.
A New Era for the Wildcats
The Wildcats will be led next season by Keil Ganz, named head coach in early April. Ganz takes over a squad that finished 28‑7 last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, a testament to the program’s recent stability.
Matt Majkrzak, a longtime assistant, will continue to support the transition, ensuring the team retains its competitive edge as it prepares for the upcoming campaign.
