Camryn Penn to Guide Cal Poly Women’s Soccer as Student Assistant

The former Mustangs captain will blend academics and coaching in a dual role for the 2026 season

A Strategic Addition for the Mustangs

Camryn Penn, a standout defender who helped Cal Poly capture its first Big West Tournament Championship in two decades, will return to the program in the 2026 season as a student assistant. In this capacity she will work directly with the coaching staff on tactical preparation, lead leadership‑development sessions for current players and coordinate alumni outreach, providing a bridge between past and future members of the program.

Penn’s on‑field résumé is extensive. Over four seasons she appeared in 80 matches, logging 6,198 minutes and starting 77 games from the backline. She was a three‑time All‑Big West selection, a two‑time Big West Champion, and earned All‑Big West Honorable Mention in 2025. During her tenure the Mustangs recorded 28 shutouts, including ten in both 2022 and 2025, and compiled a 34‑29‑18 overall record.

Beyond her playing achievements, Penn has been recognized academically, earning three Big West All‑Academic honors. She is set to complete her undergraduate studies and pursue a master’s degree in engineering management while contributing to the team’s staff. Her international experience also includes a call‑up to the Philippines Women’s National Team earlier this year, underscoring her growing influence on the global stage.

The move reflects Cal Poly’s commitment to developing well‑rounded leaders who can transition seamlessly from the pitch to the classroom and beyond. Athletic Director Jeremy “J.J.” Jensen highlighted that Penn’s blend of competitive experience, scholarly focus and community orientation aligns perfectly with the program’s vision for sustained excellence.
