The bronze‑medal winning trio of Cole Reschny, Keaton Verhoeff and Carson Carels are back on the ice, this time in Windsor, Ontario, where they will take part in a summer showcase that serves as the first major test for Canada’s under‑20 squad.
The event, which runs alongside the opening stretch of the Canadian Hockey League season, will be the crucible in which the final roster for the World Junior Championship is forged, a tournament that will unfold from December 26 to January 5 across Edmonton and Red Deer in Alberta.
Joining them will be a contingent of prospects from ten NCAA programs, including Boston University, Michigan, Denver, Penn State, Western Michigan, Omaha, Harvard, Michigan State and UConn, each hoping to earn a spot on the national team.
What’s at Stake
Reschny, who captured the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Rookie of the Year honor and earned a Calgary Flames draft, brings a fresh college pedigree, while Verhoeff, a defenseman drafted by the San Jose Sharks, is noted for being one of the youngest blue‑liners to break into college hockey in the past quarter‑century.
Carels, slated to begin his freshman year at the University of North Dakota and also drafted by the Flames, will be joined by teammates Cooper Simpson and Carter Sanderson, both of whom are representing Team USA in Windsor and are already making waves in their respective junior leagues.
Simpson, a third‑round pick of the Boston Bruins after a stint with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL, and Sanderson, captain of the Muskegon Lumberjacks who reached the Clark Cup Final in 2026 and a sixth‑round selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins, round out a diverse group of talent vying for a coveted spot.
