The Washington Capitals announced a trade that sent prospect Zac Funk to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Tyler Kopff. The move was confirmed on Tuesday and is part of the team’s effort to add size and physicality to its forward lines.
Kopff, a 6‑foot‑4, 220‑pound athlete, spent the previous season split between the AHL and ECHL, appearing in 30 games for the former and 10 for the latter. His performance earned him an entry‑level contract in March 2025 after a standout season at Brown University, where he honed his defensive responsibilities and willingness to finish checks.
General manager Brian MacLellan described the acquisition as a “depth addition that brings a gritty, competitive edge.” The organization believes Kopff’s physical style will complement the existing mix of skill players and help the team in its playoff push.
Zac Funk, who had signed a three‑year, entry‑level deal with Washington in March 2024, struggled to find consistency after turning professional. He logged 23 games with the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL and 10 contests with the Hershey Bears in the AHL before the trade.
The Sabres will integrate Funk into their system, hoping his size and work ethic can translate into regular minutes at the professional level. Both clubs view the swap as a win‑win, addressing roster needs while preserving future flexibility.
