Capitals’ Free Street Hockey Clinics Bring New Players to the Ice

Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s District of Play initiative offers equipment and coaching to dozens of youngsters in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

The Washington Capitals recently staged a free Street Caps Learn to Play clinic at Watkins Elementary School in Washington, D.C., inviting more than 30 children to experience hockey for the first time.

Growing the Game Beyond the Ice

The event, organized under Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s District of Play initiative, combined on‑ice drills with classroom‑style lessons on teamwork, rules and sportsmanship, while volunteers handed out brand‑new sticks, helmets and pads at no cost.

Open to players aged five through seventeen, the clinic emphasized fundamental skills such as skating, puck control and positional awareness, giving participants a solid foundation before they step onto a rink.

Building on the momentum, the Capitals have scheduled a series of additional free sessions this summer in Washington, D.C., Alexandria and Reston, extending the program’s reach into Maryland and Virginia communities that have historically had limited access to organized hockey.

Since the program’s inception in 2018, over 27,000 youngsters have taken part in Capitals‑sponsored youth hockey events, a statistic that reflects a pronounced uptick in hockey enrollment across the District of Columbia metropolitan area.

Local officials and youth advocates alike view the initiative as a catalyst for broader social engagement, noting that the combination of accessible equipment, experienced coaches and community partnerships is reshaping perceptions of hockey as a sport that can thrive outside traditional rink settings.
