Capitals Secure MacDonald on a Two-Way Contract
The Washington Capitals announced Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with veteran defenseman Jacob MacDonald on a one-year, two-way contract, bringing a proven offensive threat and defensive reliability to the roster.
The deal carries an average annual value of $850,000 at the NHL level and $525,000 in the AHL, providing the club with flexibility for both the big-league lineup and the farm team.
MacDonald, 33, comes off a standout campaign with the Colorado Eagles, where he captured the Eddie Shore Award as the league’s top defenseman and led all AHL blueliners with 55 points in 63 games.
His 31 goals during the 2024-25 season set a new single-season record for a defenseman in AHL history, while his 12 points in 17 games earlier in the season highlighted his offensive spark.
Across 34 NHL appearances with the San Jose Sharks in 2023-24, MacDonald contributed 27 points and has amassed 27 points in 135 career NHL games split between the Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche and San Jose.
Internationally, MacDonald began his pro journey with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL and later skated collegiately at Cornell University, where he recorded 21 points in 104 games over four seasons.
Award-Winning Career Highlights
MacDonald’s accolades include multiple AHL First All-Star Team selections, representation at the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic, and a reputation as one of the most prolific scoring defensemen in league history.
The Capitals’ general manager praised the move, stating that MacDonald’s blend of offensive upside and defensive reliability should bolster the team’s depth as they push for a playoff push.
Fans can expect to see the veteran paired with younger blueliners in training camp, as the coaching staff evaluates how his experience can translate into immediate impact on the ice.
With his contract in place, the Capitals look to blend youthful energy with veteran savvy, aiming to return to the top tier of the Metropolitan Division and contend for the Stanley Cup.
