Carly Shugrue, a 2022 graduate of North Middlesex Regional High School, has been appointed head coach of the Patriots’ field hockey team for the 2026 season, taking over from Kelly Marciano after his 15‑year tenure.
Shugrue’s varsity career spanned four years on the Patriots’ roster, where she earned a reputation as a versatile player, logging time as a goaltender as well as contributing in tennis and lacrosse before focusing on field hockey.
A Mentor’s Legacy and a Coach’s Vision
Having served three seasons as junior varsity coach, she brings a deep understanding of the program’s developmental pipeline and a personal connection to the school that shaped her athletic identity.
Marciano, who mentored Shugrue throughout her playing days, stepped down after a decade and a half of leadership, leaving behind a program that, despite occasional flashes of promise, posted a modest two‑win record in the 2025 campaign.
The Patriots finished 2025 with just two victories in 18 contests, a statistic that underscores the urgency of Shugrue’s mission to rebuild confidence among a largely youthful squad.
Practices for the upcoming season are slated to begin on August 24 at the North Middlesex Gymnasium, with the first scrimmage scheduled for September 11 against Tyngsboro High before the season opener.
Shugrue has emphasized that the early weeks will focus on instilling belief in the players, encouraging them to trust their abilities and embrace a competitive mindset as they prepare for the new schedule.
Drawing on the guidance she received from Marciano, Shugrue plans to blend disciplined training drills with mental‑skill workshops designed to boost self‑esteem and cohesion.
The coaching staff will also lean on community support, inviting alumni and local youth leagues to participate in preseason clinics that reinforce the program’s long‑term growth.
