A Legacy Forged on the Diamond
The crowd gathered on a crisp Saturday morning as the school board unveiled a new sign at the edge of the diamond, officially christening the venue Greg Pohlman Field. Once dismissed by a rival coach as a "cow pasture," the site has been reshaped over the years into a well‑maintained facility that now bears the name of the man who built its reputation.
For nearly three decades, Pohlman guided the Hawks with a blend of discipline and optimism, compiling a career record of 535‑293‑3. His tenure included 13 seasons with at least 20 wins, 11 regional titles, and the crowning achievement of the 2011 Class 1A baseball state championship, a moment still recounted by alumni such as Casey Longnecker and Sammy Coonrod.
Groundskeepers, volunteers, and local businesses joined forces to upgrade the field, installing modern drainage, a fresh playing surface, and improved lighting. The transformation reflects the community’s commitment to preserving a space where young athletes can chase their own baseball dreams.
Family has been a constant anchor throughout Pohlman’s journey. His wife, Lisa Pohlman, and daughters Macy Pohlman and Molly Pohlman frequently attended practices, cheering from the bleachers while his son, Greg Pohlman Jr., helped with equipment and field maintenance.
After stepping down in 2016, Greg Pohlman now enjoys a quieter life, driving a transit bus out of Jerseyville while still attending Hawks games whenever he can. His retirement plans include spending more time with his family and reflecting on a career defined by mentorship and perseverance.
The dedication marked the third celebration of Hawks history this school year, underscoring the lasting impact of Pohlman’s contributions to the school’s athletic identity. Leaders from the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association and the Illinois College Athletics Hall of Fame were on hand to honor the coach whose influence extends far beyond the diamond.
