Carter Hopkins, a senior Perry Pirate, has returned to the field fully healthy after a hip injury that forced him to miss the opening four games of last season. The injury, a partial tear of his hip bone sustained during summer practice, required more than a month of rehabilitation before he made a strong comeback in the final six regular‑season games and three playoff contests.
A Comeback Story
During his sophomore year, Hopkins emerged as an unexpected dual‑threat, initially slotted outside the traditional running back role before being promoted due to fumbles by other backs. He finished that season with over 900 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, while also excelling at linebacker on the defensive side of the ball.
Coach Bob Gecewich has highlighted Hopkins as a key weapon, emphasizing his ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively. ‘He’s a player who can change the momentum with a single play,’ Gecewich said, underscoring the confidence the coaching staff has in his versatility.
A Talented Supporting Cast
Perry enters the season with a highly talented returning roster. Quarterback Nate Trefzger returns after throwing for 1,625 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, while top receivers Traxton Richards, Chase Sivon, and Greg Mechenbier provide deep‑ball threats. The defense also benefits from several starters who helped the team finish 10‑3 last season.
The Pirates are slated to open the season on August 21 against rival Madison in the traditional showdown for The Little Brown Jug, before moving on to non‑conference matchups and then CVC play. With the experience gained from a strong previous campaign and the leadership of Hopkins, the team harbors ambitions of advancing to the Division V regional final, where they could meet opponents such as Cardinal Mooney and Girard.
Looking Ahead
The combination of Hopkins’ dual‑threat capabilities, a potent passing attack, and a fortified defense positions Perry as a serious contender for a regional championship. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the senior’s health and performance translate into a decisive season for the Pirates.
