Carter Sanderson, a 6‑foot‑2 forward from Pierre, South Dakota, has officially committed to the University of North Dakota’s freshman class for the 2027‑28 season, a move that promises to add size, grit and scoring punch to the Fighting Hawks.
Sanderson’s résumé reads like a scout’s dream: at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase he ranked second among U.S. skaters with four goals and seventh in points with seven, a performance that followed a USHL campaign in which he captained the Muskegon Lumberjacks to 17 goals and 34 points in 54 games. His physical brand was also evident, finishing second in hits per game behind incoming UND freshman Brock Schultz.
Rather than extend his junior career, Sanderson elected to sign with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, a decision he says will broaden his experience before he dons the green and white. The move reflects a growing trend of top prospects testing the WHL’s competitive environment as a springboard to college hockey.
