Florida Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe made an unexpected appearance at a Special Olympics ball hockey clinic in Sunrise, Florida, turning a routine summer camp session into a memorable celebration of sport and community.
A Champion’s Commitment to Inclusion
Verhaeghe, a three‑time Stanley Cup champion, has long used his platform to support charitable causes, particularly those affiliated with Best Buddies and Special Olympics. His wife’s decade‑long involvement with Best Buddies sparked his own dedication to ending the isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
During the clinic, the forward joined scrimmages, posed for photos and signed autographs, drawing cheers from participants ranging from children to adults with intellectual disabilities. He praised their enthusiasm and skill, noting that their passion for hockey was as infectious as ever.
Beyond the Rink
After capturing the Stanley Cup with the Panthers, Verhaeghe brought the coveted trophy to a special skate that benefited several charities, including Best Buddies and Special Olympics. He regularly volunteers with Best Buddies, an organization that pairs volunteers with individuals with disabilities, and he plans to devote more of his time to such efforts now that the NHL season has paused.
Looking ahead, Verhaeghe expressed excitement about the Panthers’ future and their pursuit of bringing another championship to South Florida, while also emphasizing that his extra time will be spent giving back to the communities that have supported him throughout his career.
