Casey Benson Joins Arizona State Coaching Staff

Former Gatorade Player of the Year returns to Tempe as assistant coach

A Local Talent Takes the Helm

Casey Benson, a Tempe native and former standout at Corona Del Sol High School, has been appointed assistant coach for the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball program, bringing a blend of local legacy and international experience.

His high school career included three consecutive state championships and the 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year award, marking him as one of Arizona’s most celebrated prospects.

Benson then moved to the University of Oregon, where he contributed to a program that reached the 2017 NCAA Final Four and amassed 90 wins over three seasons, ranking among the Ducks’ most successful eras.

After completing his college eligibility, he embarked on a seven‑year professional journey that took him across Europe, with stints in Slovenia, Finland, Bulgaria, Germany and Belgium, including a period with the Leuven Bears.

He returned to the Phoenix area to serve as an assistant coach at Dream City Christian, a nationally recognized prep school, before earning a master’s degree in leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Benson’s recent move to Arizona State places him alongside EJ Rowland on Coach Bennett’s rebuilding staff, a partnership that the head coach says reflects both Benson’s character and his deep roots in the community.

In a statement, Benson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Coach Bennett and to help shape the program during a transitional phase, emphasizing his desire to give back to the city that shaped his basketball foundation.
