A Strategic Homecoming
Casey Benson, a three‑time Arizona State Champion and Gatorade State Player of the Year, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Arizona State University men’s basketball program, bringing a blend of playing pedigree and coaching acumen to the Sun Devil staff.
Benson’s high school career at Corona Del Sol in Tempe cemented his reputation as one of the state’s most prolific scorers, where he averaged 17.8 points per game and shot 53.6% from the field as a senior. His exploits earned him a scholarship to the University of Oregon, where under coach Dana Altman he helped the Ducks reach the 2016‑17 Pac‑12 Final Four and amassed 90 victories over three seasons.
After college, Benson pursued a professional career that took him across Europe, logging stints in Slovenia, Finland, Bulgaria, Belgium and Germany, including notable periods with Panthers Schwenningen and Leuven Bears. The experience honed his tactical understanding and reinforced his commitment to player development.
Transitioning to the sidelines, Benson served as an assistant coach and athletic director at Dream City Christian, a nationally recognized prep school in Phoenix, before returning to Arizona. He now joins EJ Rowland as one of two assistants on the Sun Devil bench, alongside veteran staff members Rick Croy, Joe Rahon and Da vid Patrick, all of whom share ties to Randy Bennett’s coaching philosophy.
Benson holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon and a Master of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University, underscoring his dedication to scholarly growth alongside his basketball pursuits. His return to Tempe is viewed as a strategic move to enrich the program’s culture and nurture emerging talent.
The addition of Benson is expected to deepen the Sun Devils’ recruiting reach and reinforce a developmental pipeline that blends West Coast talent with Arizona’s own prospects, positioning Arizona State for a resurgence in the competitive Pac‑12 landscape.
