A Summer of Opportunity
Western Carolina's baseball program continues to extend its reach beyond the college season, with a wave of current and former Catamounts scattered across a dozen summer and professional leagues across the United States.
Among the standouts in the Coastal Plain League, Walker Fox, Jackson Lyda and Bryce Davidson have formed a potent trio for the Forest City Owls, while Wyatt Stanley is contributing to the High Point-Thomasville Hi‑Tomes and Turner Gross has earned a spot on the Florida League All‑Star team while playing for the Leesburg Lightning.
Zebby Matthews, a recent graduate, has taken his talent to the majors, earning a roster spot with the Minnesota Twins and already appearing in several games for the club.
The momentum isn’t limited to the high‑profile names; players such as Carlos Diaz with the Florence Flamingos, Davis Jabaley on the Lexington County Blowfish, and Mason Holton, who remains eligible as a post‑collegiate participant, are also making notable contributions.
Additional Catamounts are spread across the Valley Baseball League, where three of them are suiting up for the Strausburg Express, and the Old North State League, where Carson Wallace is generating buzz with the Waynesville Hollers. Turner Gross and Ryan Perzanowski are also part of the Leesburg Lightning, with Gross selected for the West squad in the league’s all‑star showcase.
Beyond the summer circuit, eleven former Catamounts are now navigating professional pathways that include the MLB Draft League, the Frontier League and a host of minor‑league affiliates. Names like Justice Bigbie with the Erie SeaWolves, Hayden Friese with the Augusta Green Jackets, and Cannon Pickell with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys illustrate the breadth of opportunities.
Coaches and analysts point to the program’s strong player‑development pipeline, noting that the mix of high‑level summer competition and exposure to professional scouts has helped Western Carolina alumni transition smoothly into the next stage of their careers.
Looking Ahead
As the summer winds down, the impact of these experiences will ripple into the upcoming college season and beyond, positioning the Catamounts as a consistent source of talent for both summer and professional baseball.
