A Season of Promise and Reflection
The Christian Brothers Academy baseball team saw its 2026 campaign cut short by a 3-2 defeat in the Class AAA sectional quarterfinals against Albany, a loss that left the seniors contemplating the end of a memorable high school career.
While the defeat stung, the roster’s story continued beyond the field as five seniors secured commitments to Division I programs, and one elected to pursue baseball at the Division III level at Hamilton College.
Commitments and Choices
Among the signees, Tommy Toher will join the University at Albany, where he will also continue his football career as a senior, drawn by Coach Jon Mueller’s vision and the chance to represent his hometown. Garrett Rizzuto chose Hofstra after forging a connection with Coach Frank Catalanotto, whose own MLB background added weight to the decision. Carter Dean, a Suburban Council all‑star, opted for the United States Military Academy at West Point, citing its structure and the prospect of graduating early to compete for St. Bonaventure in 2027.
Jacob Podlucky committed to Canisius College, Braden White to St. Bonaventure, and Nick Huban headed to Hamilton College, each weighing factors such as immediate playing time, academic fit, and personal ambition.
Nick Davey, a teammate who emphasized the group’s collective desire to compete right away, noted that the 2027 season will be built on the lessons of the 2026 loss, with an eye toward teamwork and preparation.
Motivation for the Next Chapter
Coach Jon Mueller and the rest of the staff have already begun outlining a plan that emphasizes stronger pitching depth and a more aggressive hitting approach, aiming to turn the narrow sectional defeat into a championship pursuit. The players also expressed excitement about representing their schools on the field and in the classroom, with Toher highlighting the opportunity to wear the same colors his hometown community has long supported.
