The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers, a team of women aged 50 and older, have cemented their place in sports history by securing their third consecutive national championship in the Granny Basketball League.
Championship Game Highlights
The final showdown, played on July 19 at the Prairie Trail Sports Complex in Ankeny, Iowa, pitted the Sizzlers against the Lady Redbirds of Carlisle. In a tightly contested battle, the Sizzlers edged out their opponents 51-46, sealing the victory in front of a modest but enthusiastic crowd.
The triumph marks the seventh overall national title for the Sizzlers, underscoring a dynasty that has dominated the league’s top Championship Division. Earlier in the tournament, the team posted a 2-1 record in pool play, defeating the Waco Six Shooters from Texas and the Late Bloomers of Norway, Iowa, before advancing to the championship.

Founded as a nonprofit, the Granny Basketball League brings together more than 800 players and volunteers from 56 teams spanning ten states and Canada. The league preserves the history of six‑on‑six girls’ basketball, using modified 1920‑era rules and uniforms that pay homage to the sport’s early pioneers. Beyond competition, the organization emphasizes competitive exercise, sportsmanship, and lasting friendships among its members.
