A Century of Celebration
On July 25, the Better Living Center in West Springfield will host Hockeyday, a centennial celebration marking 100 years of professional hockey in Western Massachusetts, running from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organized by the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society, the event invites longtime fans and newcomers alike to explore memorabilia, enjoy games and purchase exclusive merchandise that honors the region’s storied past.
Ticket pricing reflects the society’s dual membership structure: $15 for members and $18 for non‑members, with sales available both online and at the venue.
The centennial ties back to 1926, when the Springfield Indians first took to the ice in the American Hockey League, later rebranding as the Springfield Kings between 1967 and 1975.
Attendees can look forward to raffles, a silent auction, vintage displays and a showcase of historic logos, while a fleet of memorabilia‑laden buses — including the Springfield Thunderbirds’ own — will be on site.
Former Springfield Kings player Mike Corrigan noted that the gathering has grown each year, offering fans a chance to meet roughly twenty former professionals, share stories and sign autographs.
A special tribute will honor Henry ‘Buddy’ Maracle, a 1926 Indian whose descendants from St. Catharines, Ontario, will join the event, underscoring the sport’s trans‑border legacy.
Beyond nostalgia, the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society emphasizes creating an enjoyable experience for all guests, ensuring the day’s festivities celebrate both history and community.
