Central Community College in Columbus, Nebraska, has been awarded a $5,000 grant that will seed the launch of a women's flag football team, marking a historic step for the institution and the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Funding from a Unique Partnership
The financial support comes from the NJCAA Foundation, NFL FLAG, and Reigning Champs Experiences (RCX), each bringing resources to cover start‑up costs and logistical needs as the program prepares to field a competitive squad by 2028.
College officials say the grant not only eases the financial burden of equipment, travel and coaching, but also signals a broader commitment to expanding athletic opportunities for female student‑athletes across the region.
A First in Nebraska and Region 11
Central Community College will become the first community college in Nebraska and the inaugural member of NJCAA Region 11 to sponsor a flag football team, positioning the school at the forefront of a sport that is rapidly gaining traction among women.
Mary Young, athletics director at CCC, expressed gratitude, noting that the funding will provide essential resources and open doors for student‑athletes who might otherwise lack such experiences.
Andrew Givens, Executive Director of the NJCAA Foundation, highlighted the strategic importance of women's flag football, emphasizing that institutional growth and a richer experience for athletes are central to the foundation’s mission.
Izell Reese, CEO of RCX Sports and Executive Director of NFL FLAG, underscored the organization’s dedication to creating inclusive pathways, stating that the partnership reflects a shared vision of making football accessible to all.
NFL FLAG, a non‑contact program for boys and girls ages 5‑17, teaches fundamental skills and life lessons, and RCX Sports serves as its official operator, further amplifying the reach of the initiative.
Troy Vincent, Sr., Executive Vice President of NFL Football Operations, praised the NJCAA’s expansion of flag football opportunities, remarking that the sport’s growth demonstrates that football is for everyone.
