A New Direction for the Bulldogs
Central High School in Springfield has announced that it will pause its varsity football program for the 2026 season, a move driven by a shortage of players that left the junior varsity squad with fewer than 20 athletes last year. Administrators say the pause will allow the school to invest in a dedicated junior program that can better prepare athletes for competition in the Ozark Conference the following year.
New head coach John Ely, who has been traveling from Kansas to lead weekend practices, is already visible in the community, meeting with families and emphasizing the long‑term development of the Bulldogs. Athletic Director Josh Scott echoed the sentiment, noting that the change is about building a sustainable future for the program rather than a short‑term fix.
Part of that sustainability plan includes a $10 million renovation of Harrison Stadium, aimed at modernizing the facility and giving the school’s sports teams a venue that matches contemporary standards. The upgrades are being framed as a community investment that will benefit not only football but also other extracurricular activities.
To compensate for the absence of a traditional Friday night football game, the school will host a soccer match under the lights as part of homecoming celebrations. The Bulldogs’ soccer team is scheduled to face Hillcrest at Missouri State on September 16, following the university’s game against Kansas City, offering families an alternative way to gather and support student athletes.
The decision reflects a broader trend across Missouri, where declining participation numbers have prompted several districts to reconsider the future of high school football. By reallocating resources and exploring new community events, Central High hopes to set a precedent for other schools facing similar challenges.
