Upper Arlington captured the Ohio High School Athletic Association state championship in 2025, Olentangy Liberty followed with a title in 2023, and the Columbus Chill’s U18 squad secured the USA Hockey U18 Youth Tier II 3A national championship in 2024. These victories mark a rare concentration of success for a region that had long been overshadowed by traditional powerhouses.
Championship Momentum
The surge is not accidental. Over the last decade, the area has invested heavily in ice infrastructure, adding rinks and expanding access to ice time. The Blue Jackets’ entry into the NHL in the 1990s planted a seed of interest, while the Capital Hockey Conference now fields fifteen teams, thirteen of which call Central Ohio home. This network has created a competitive pipeline that funnels talent into high school programs and beyond.
A key component of player development is the Columbus Chill’s pre/post schedule, which lets high school athletes train at the club level while staying compliant with OHSAA regulations. The extra ice time accelerates skill growth and has become a model for other programs seeking to balance academics with elite competition.
Building the Future
The ripple effect extends beyond the rink. Community initiatives such as Learn to Play clinics and expansive youth hockey organizations have broadened participation, turning hockey from a niche sport into a mainstream pursuit. As a result, the talent pool in Central Ohio is deepening, and the region’s teams are increasingly viewed as contenders in state and national tournaments.
The shift also reflects a broader realignment of power within Ohio hockey. Historically, Cleveland and Toledo dominated the sport’s landscape, but the rise of Central Ohio teams signals a new competitive balance that could redefine future championships.
