A community investment in youth sports
The Charity League of Corpus Christi has pledged $428,000 to the Police Athletic League to fund the renovation of a new baseball complex on Baldwin Boulevard. The contribution is part of a broader effort to provide affordable athletic opportunities for the city’s youngsters.
The Police Athletic League, which already offers basketball, soccer and taekwondo at little or no cost, plans to expand its baseball program with the upgraded fields. Organizers say the facility will serve as a safe, structured environment that keeps children engaged and away from negative influences.
Sgt. Ronald Zirbes of the Corpus Christi Police Department, who helps oversee the program, emphasized that the league welcomes participants regardless of their financial background. “Our goal is inclusion,” he said, noting that no child will be turned away because of economic circumstances.
Myra Sanchez, a longtime supporter of the initiative, highlighted the importance of sports in shaping a positive future for the community’s youth. She expressed confidence that the new fields will be ready by the end of the year, offering a fresh venue for competition and camaraderie.
Beyond the physical upgrades, the project reflects a collaborative vision among local institutions, including Texas A&M University‑Corpus Christi, which has partnered on the development. University representatives said the facility will also serve as a field‑site for educational programs and community outreach.
City officials and volunteers are already mobilizing resources to ensure the construction stays on schedule. With the funding secured, the expectation is that the renovated baseball complex will be operational before the year’s close, ready to host leagues, tournaments and recreational sessions for the city’s next generation of athletes.
