Charles Perkins, the 6‑foot‑2, 333‑pound redshirt senior defensive lineman, has returned to Madison after a brief stint exploring the transfer portal. His presence adds a rare blend of size and experience to a Wisconsin defensive line that has been searching for consistency.
Coaches have noted a marked physical development in Perkins since his first year in the program. Position coach EJ Whitlow praised the player’s leadership and the way his improved play style has elevated the entire unit during fall camp.
Perkins’ résumé includes first‑team All‑Big South‑OVC honors at UT Martin, where he recorded 40 tackles, 19 pressures and 2.5 sacks. Those numbers, coupled with a Pro Football Focus grade of 62.9, signal a player who has already proven he can generate pressure and disrupt opposing offenses.
The Badgers’ defensive line now features a partnership with Hammond Russell, whom teammates describe as the group’s ‘DNA.’ Together they aim to stop both the run and the pass, a goal that Perkins says is achievable only when the line embraces its mismatched strengths.
