A Legacy in the Making
Charles Woodson Jr., a three‑star safety from Orlando, Florida, has officially pledged to the University of Michigan, ending a recruitment that had drawn interest from several powerhouse programs.
Ranked as the No. 44 safety nationally and the 49th overall prospect in Florida for the 2027 class, Woodson Jr. narrowed his choices to Michigan and Kentucky before deciding on Ann Arbor, a decision heavily influenced by his family’s deep ties to the school.
His father, Charles Woodson, remains a towering figure in college football history — a 1997 Heisman Trophy winner, Pro Football Hall of Famer, and one of the most celebrated defensive backs ever to play the game.
The younger Woodson’s decision was also shaped by Michigan’s new leadership group, which includes head coach Kyle Whittingham, defensive coordinator Jay Hill, and recruiting liaison Tyler Stockton, who collectively emphasized a pathway that honored his lineage while promising a fresh start.
Scouting reports highlight his intelligence, physicality and versatility, noting a junior season in which he recorded 73 tackles, two interceptions, eight pass breakups and a fumble recovery on defense, plus a kickoff return for a touchdown on special teams.
Andrew Ivins, director of scouting at 247Sports, praised Woodson Jr. as a "smart safety" who has made noticeable strides between his sophomore and junior years, underscoring the belief that the recruit can contribute immediately.
With the commitment now official, Michigan’s 2027 class gains a player who will look to carve his own path in Ann Arbor, nearly three decades after his father’s iconic Heisman moment.
