Expanding Access for Charlotte Fans
The Charlotte Hornets have struck a deal with Cox Media Group that will bring non‑national games to local television screens in the Charlotte market. Starting this season, fans can watch those games on WOSC Channel 9 and TV64, two over‑the‑air stations that replace the previous premium cable outlets.
The agreement goes beyond a simple rights swap. It adds a slate of original programming, including a schedule‑reveal special slated for August 13, along with pre‑game and post‑game segments that air after every locally broadcast contest. Long‑time voices such as Eric Collins and Dell Curry are slated to remain part of the broadcast team.
The arrangement is framed as a one‑year pilot, with the parties promising to reassess its performance as the sports‑media landscape continues to shift. Hornets executives say the partnership reflects a commitment to delivering what they describe as the best broadcast experience in professional sports while deepening ties with the Charlotte community.
By moving games to free‑to‑air channels, the franchise hopes to broaden its reach and make the team more accessible to families and casual viewers who may not subscribe to cable or streaming services. The move is also seen as a strategic step to grow the Hornets’ regional footprint beyond the traditional basketball audience.
