A Late Winner at Jen Gaber Field
Charlotte Women's Soccer opened its season with a narrow 1-0 victory over USC Upstate on August 23, playing in front of a modest crowd at Jen Gaber Field.
The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when sophomore forward Mariles Pison found the net, marking the first goal of her collegiate career and putting the Niners ahead.
A prime chance arrived in the 40th minute when Kate Pratt attempted a shot that missed the mark, but the early onslaught already signaled Charlotte's attacking intent.
Charlotte's statistical dominance was clear, as they outshot the Spartans 18‑4, with Evie Craven alone firing seven attempts and Pison adding three more, while the backline kept USC Upstate at bay until the 58th minute.
Goalkeeper Shines
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Anna Ford posted a clean sheet, making two key saves, including a spectacular stop in the 88th minute that preserved the lead.
The win marks the first of what could be a pivotal stretch for the team, as they prepare for two consecutive road matches at Liberty later this month.
