Chaz Coleman’s Holdout Highlights Vols’ Defensive Overhaul

Transfer edge rusher sidelined by personal matters as Tennessee rebuilds its pass rush

Chaz Coleman, the five‑star transfer who enrolled at the University of Tennessee in January, has not reported to the Vols’ summer conditioning program, leaving observers to wonder about his availability for the fall slate.

A Promising Yet Injured Start

Coleman’s collegiate debut at Penn State was marked by flashes of brilliance — eight tackles, three tackles‑for‑loss, one sack and two forced fumbles — while his pass‑rush metrics earned exceptional grades from Pro Football Focus. However, a late‑season injury limited him to nine games, and he finished with 15 quarterback pressures across 70 pass‑rush attempts.

Coach Josh Heupel addressed the absence directly, stating that Coleman is navigating personal matters and that the program is fully supportive of him during this time.

The situation is compounded by the departure of several key edge rushers — Joshua Josephs, Jordan Ross, Caleb Herring, Jayden Loftin, Kellen Lindstrom and Emmanuel Okoye — who have moved on from the program. In response, Tennessee has added Jordan Norman from Tulane, redshirt freshman Christian Gass, and freshmen Zach Groves, Hezekiah Harris and Kedric Golston to the mix.

While the loss of experienced pass rushers presents a challenge, the coaching staff remains confident that Coleman’s eventual return will inject the talent and depth needed to stabilize the defensive line. His blend of size, speed and pass‑rush productivity is viewed as a cornerstone for the Vols’ attempt to replenish a unit that has lost a significant portion of its edge‑rush talent.
