Tennessee’s football program announced that edge rusher Chaz Coleman would no longer be part of the roster after a medical disqualification. The move follows a brief but eventful stint in Knoxville that began when the former Penn State standout transferred to the Volunteers.
A promising start turned turbulent
Coleman arrived in the transfer portal with a reputation as the No. 9 overall player, drawing attention from analysts and fans alike. However, his integration was quickly complicated by a series of off‑field and logistical challenges.
Strength coach Derek Owings was the first to notice that something was amiss, citing tardiness, disengagement and personal strain that began to affect his performance. Owings raised concerns early, prompting a supportive conversation with Heupel.
Head coach Josh Heupel acknowledged the off‑field challenges and said the staff would continue to support Coleman as he navigates the next phase of his career.
During his freshman season at Penn State, Coleman recorded eight tackles, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, a sack and a forced fumble. His pass‑rush grade of 90.3 from Pro Football Focus topped all FBS freshmen, underscoring the talent that made his transfer so anticipated.
