The Cheboygan High School Chiefs soccer team concluded the 2025 season with a record that fell short of the program’s ambitions, prompting Coach Ryan Davis to focus on reconstruction for the upcoming year.
Returning talent ready to lead
A core group of players will return to the pitch, including junior defender Landon Tebo, sophomore defender Sabastian Schittekat, junior forward‑midfielder Hayden Wheelock, junior midfielder Trenton LaHaie, and junior attacker Hunter Lockwood. Each brings a distinct set of skills that the coaching staff hopes will translate into greater on‑field cohesion.
Tebo, who captained the side in 2025, is expected to anchor the defense alongside Schittekat, whose defensive contributions earned an all‑Northern Shores Conference honorable mention. Wheelock, who recorded seven goals and two assists as a sophomore, will operate both up front and in midfield, while LaHaie’s extensive experience should provide stability in the center of the park. Lockwood, who contributed two goals and two assists as a sophomore, aims to expand his role as a midfield engine.
Leadership will be shared among Wheelock and Schittekat, who have been named captains for the 2026 campaign. Their familiarity with the system and willingness to take on greater responsibility are viewed as pivotal to restoring confidence within the squad.
Coach Davis remains optimistic that the blend of seasoned contributors and emerging talent will enable the Chiefs to compete more effectively in the Northern Shores Conference. While the previous season’s results were disappointing, the focus now is on incremental improvement, disciplined training, and leveraging the strengths of the returning roster.
