Cheltenham High School Cancels 2026 Football Seasons
Cheltenham High School announced on Tuesday that it will cancel both its varsity and junior varsity football programs for the 2026 season.
Superintendent Brian Scriven explained in a letter to families that the decision was driven by the need to address a series of critical tasks arising from a recent locker‑room hazing incident.
The investigation, being conducted jointly by the Cheltenham Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, remains active, with officials still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Last year’s inquiry revealed that a student‑on‑student assault occurred in the football locker room, with nearly 20 by‑standers either failing to intervene or participating in the misconduct. Some of the incidents were recorded on video.
While the higher‑level teams will be paused, the district will still field a ninth‑grade squad next year and will continue to support the pep band, drum line, color guard and cheerleading squads, ensuring that spirit activities remain part of the school experience.
Scriven urged families with questions about eligibility or potential transfers to contact the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, and the district said it will work closely with coaches and advisors to provide the necessary opportunities for all affected students.
