Cheltenham School District Cancels 2026 Football Season Amid Hazing Probe

Superintendent cites ongoing investigations and a toxic culture as reasons for halting varsity and junior varsity programs

The Cheltenham School District in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, has announced that the 2026 football season will be canceled for both the varsity and junior varsity programs at its high school.

Investigation Background

The decision follows a hazing investigation that was launched after a prior letter disclosed that roughly 19 students observed an assault without intervening, while others took part or recorded the incident on video.

Superintendent Dr. Brian W. Scriven explained in a community letter that corrective measures cannot be implemented until the internal and external investigations are fully concluded, prompting the district to suspend the entire season.

Program Continuation

Although the varsity and junior varsity teams will be paused, the district will still field a ninth‑grade football squad, allowing younger students to continue participating in the sport.

District officials emphasized that the cancellation is intended to address a broader pattern of behavior, as an external review uncovered an overall toxic and negative culture within the football program.

The district plans to use the suspension period to conduct a thorough assessment, engage with families, and develop a strategy for cultural reform before any football activities are reinstated.
